Why You’ll Love This DIY
DIY Natural Scented Body Powder is a fantastic way to keep your skin feeling fresh and comfortable throughout the day. This simple, do-it-yourself powder not only absorbs moisture but also adds a delightful fragrance from diluted essential oils, making it a perfect addition to your daily routine.
In this article, we’ll provide two options for making your own scented body powder—one using talcum powder and another that’s completely talc-free.
Both recipes use natural ingredients, including cornstarch and sodium bicarbonate. While talcum powder is derived from a natural mineral, concerns about its safety have prompted many to reconsider its use. Whether you opt for the traditional recipe or the talc-free version, you can enjoy a refreshing body powder crafted with natural ingredients to suit your needs.
Ingredients Needed
Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.
- Sodium Bicarbonate: A natural compound that helps absorb moisture and neutralizes odors, making it a great addition to body powder.
- Cornstarch: A natural, plant-based ingredient that effectively absorbs moisture and adds a silky feel to the powder.
- Talcum Powder (Optional): A naturally occurring mineral that absorbs moisture and provides a smooth texture. While widely used in body powders, some may have concerns about its safety. Below, I provide two options: one with talc and one without. Choose the one you prefer.
- Diluted Essential Oil: For a personalized fragrance, use diluted essential oil. To make your own, mix 1 gram (0.035 oz) of concentrated essential oil with 100 grams (3.5 oz) of sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.
- Mica Color Powder (Optional)
- Beauty Glitter (Optional): Make sure to use glitter specifically designed for beauty and skincare.
Tools Needed
- Large bowl
- Tablespoon
- Teaspoon
- Small silicone spatula
- Pipette (or dropper) for adding drops
- Sieve
- Glass container to store your DIY Natural Scented Body Powder
Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.

Spoons Explained!
In some articles, we use ‘One Spoon,’ ‘Rounded Spoon,’ and ‘Heaped Spoon’ for non-liquid ingredients instead of precise measurements. These terms apply to both tablespoons and teaspoons:
- One Spoon: Ingredient filled and leveled in a measuring spoon.
- Rounded Spoon: Ingredient slightly piled above the spoon’s edge.
- Heaped Spoon: Ingredient scooped as high as possible on the spoon
- Slightly Heaped Spoon: A bit more than a rounded spoon but not overly heaped.
1- Begin by placing in a large bowl either of the following, depending on whether you choose to include talcum powder or not:
- For the talcum powder recipe: 2 slightly heaped tablespoons of cornstarch and 1 rounded tablespoon of talcum powder.
- For the talc-free recipe: 3 slightly heaped tablespoons of cornstarch.
2- Add 2 rounded teaspoons of sodium bicarbonate to the mixture.
3- Use a silicone spatula to blend the ingredients thoroughly, ensuring they are well combined.
4- Add 4-6 drops of diluted essential oil, choosing one that suits your preference. Use just enough for a subtle fragrance, so it’s pleasant but not overwhelming to those around you.
To create diluted essential oil, mix 1 gram (0.035 oz) of concentrated essential oil with 100 grams (3.5 oz) of a carrier oil, such as sweet almond oil or jojoba oil. Stir well until fully combined.
5- Blend again thoroughly.
6- As an optional step, you can add a small amount of mica color powder to the mixture for a light, appealing hue. Be careful not to add too much; use the end of a toothpick to pick up a tiny amount of mica and mix it in well. You can opt for gold, bronze, light pink, or pearly white mica color.
7- Sift the mixture through a sieve to achieve a fine, uniform powder.
8- Pour the DIY body powder into a suitable glass container. Its shelf life depends on the validity of the cornstarch but can be a year or more if stored properly. To maximize freshness, keep the container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.
Hints and Tips
i- Add a Touch of Sparkle: You can include a small amount of beauty glitter that matches the mica color for a subtle shimmer. Make sure to use glitter specifically designed for beauty and skincare. If you intend to add glitter, use gold glitter with gold mica for light skin tones and bronze glitter with bronze mica for deeper skin tones.
ii- Fragrance Options: If you don’t mind using synthetic fragrance oils, feel free to add a few drops of your favorite fragrance oil instead of using diluted essential oil. You can even mix two different fragrance oils to create a unique scent. Just be careful not to overdo it, as a little goes a long way.
iii- Customize with Essential Oil Blends: If you prefer natural scents, experiment with blending different diluted essential oils, such as lavender and chamomile for a calming effect, or lemon and eucalyptus for a refreshing touch.
iv- Test for Sensitivity: Before using any new essential oil or fragrance, test a small amount on your skin to ensure there are no allergic reactions or irritations, especially if you have sensitive skin.
How to Use:
a. Preparation: After showering, make sure your skin is clean and completely dry before applying the body powder. This will help the powder adhere better and absorb moisture effectively.
b. Application: Sprinkle a small amount of the body powder into your hands or directly onto your body. Focus on areas like your underarms, feet, or any other areas prone to moisture. For even application, consider using a soft powder puff or a cotton ball. This will help distribute the powder more evenly and prevent clumping on the skin.
c. Massage In: Gently massage the powder into your skin until it is fully absorbed. This will help keep your skin feeling soft and fresh throughout the day.
d. Reapplication: If needed, reapply the body powder during the day to maintain a fresh scent and keep moisture at bay, especially in hot or humid conditions.
e. Storage: Store any unused body powder in a cool, dry place, preferably in an airtight container to preserve its fragrance and effectiveness.
Benefits
Moisture Absorption and Odor Neutralization: The combination of cornstarch and sodium bicarbonate effectively absorbs excess moisture and neutralizes odors, keeping your skin dry, fresh, and comfortable throughout the day.
Gentle on Skin: Made from natural ingredients, this body powder is less likely to irritate sensitive skin compared to commercial powders that may contain harsh chemicals or artificial fragrances.
Customizable Fragrance: By using diluted essential oils, you can personalize the scent of your body powder, allowing you to choose fragrances that suit your preferences and mood.
Chemical-Free: This DIY option eliminates the need for potentially harmful additives and preservatives, making it a safer alternative for your skincare routine.
Talc Consideration: While talcum powder is derived from a natural mineral and has moisture-absorbing properties, concerns about its safety have led many to seek talc-free alternatives. By opting for a DIY version, you can choose a formula that aligns with your health preferences.
