Ingredients Needed
- Glycerine soap. Ensure it is of high quality.
- Soft shea butter
- Dried rose petals that are ground or crushed
- Vegetable glycerine
- Oil-soluble color. We will use red color since the soap is all about roses.
- Rose oil
- Frankincense oil. If you prefer to make your own frankincense oil, I have covered it in a previous article. For your convenience, I will repeat here:
Notes on Ingredients
Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.
When an essential oil is included, I use either concentrated or diluted essential oils. If using concentrated essential oils, use up to 0.5% by weight to ensure safety for all skin types. To use diluted essential oils, mix 1 gram (0.035 oz) of concentrated essential oil with 100 grams (3.5 oz) of sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.
If a recipe calls for fragrance oil, you can use diluted essential oil instead to benefit from both its scent and therapeutic effects. This provides a natural alternative to synthetic fragrance oils and offers additional benefits.
To Make the Frankincense Oil
- Using a coffee grinder, grind one tablespoon of frankincense till it becomes powder
- Add 100g of sweet almond oil
- Store the container for 20 days in a cabinet. Shake the container every day or so.
- Important: after 20 days, filter it thoroughly to remove any residue completely.
Tools Needed
- Large mold
- Cutting board
- Knife
- casserole pan
- Bowl
- Silicone spatula for mixing
- Medical alcohol 70%
Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.
Steps: DIY Rose & Frankincense Soap
The quantities below will make you 9 rose & frankincense soap bars, which you can use personally or give as gifts. If you prefer to make a fewer number of soap bars, just adjust the quantities proportionately for all the ingredients. The mold required depends on the soap quantity you want to make. Here, I am using a mold that can take 1 kilogram of soap mix.
Note: Have the quantities measured and ready before starting. If your glycerine soap is of lower quality, it might harden quickly after you melt it in a bain-marie as explained below. So it is better to have the quantities ready.
1- Start by measuring and preparing these quantities of the ingredients:
- 1 kilogram (35.27 oz) of glycerine soap
- 10 grams (0.35 oz) of shea butter
- 10 grams (0.35 oz) of dried and crushed rose petals
- In a bowl, mix 10 grams (0.35 oz) each of the rose oil, frankincense oil and glycerine
- You will need 3 teaspoons of oil-soluble color in liquid form. If you have it as powder, mix it with a small quantity of sweet almond oil.
2- Cut up 1 kilogram (35.27 oz) of glycerine soap into pieces.
3- Put them in a casserole pan. In the image below, I used both transparent and white glycerine soap, because I didn’t have 1 kilogram of either. So I used 1/2 kg of each.
4- Place the pan in a bain-marie (hot water bath) to melt the glycerine soap.
A bain-marie is done by placing the pan in a larger pot of hot steaming water. This will gradually melt whatever is inside the pan without causing it to burn. As the contents melt, make sure to mix every now and then.
After the contents have melted, take the pan out of the bain-marie.
5- Add 10 grams (0.35 oz) of shea butter.
6- With the silicone spatula, mix to melt the shea butter in the hot glycerine soap.
7- Add 3 teaspoons of the red oil-soluble color.
8- Mix the color.
9- Add 10 grams (0.35 oz) of dried and crushed rose petals.
10- Stir the contents for a good mixing.
11- Add the mix that we have prepared of rose oil, frankincense oil, and glycerine.
12- Mix the contents well.
13- Pour the contents in the mold.
14- Spray the surface with alcohol 70% to get rid of the bubbles.
15- Cover the mold with a towel and leave it to cool down. Depending on the weather in your area, it could take 3-12 hours to cool properly.
16- If you wish to add some decoration on the surface, wait for the soap to solidify partially, then insert carefully some dried rose buds. Take care not to disturb much the soap surface. Leave it to cool fully.
17- After the soap has fully hardened, remove it carefully from the mold.
18- With the knife, cut the soap into bars.
19- Your DIY Rose & Frankincense Soap is now done! You can start using it after a day.
