Why You’ll Love This DIY

DIY Solid Musk Cube Recipe for Skincare Products is a luxurious way to bring both fragrance and moisturization to your homemade body scrubs, creams, and soaps. This versatile musk cube brings a unique fragrance that enhances the sensory experience of your skincare routine, without being applied directly to the skin. Perfect for those who love natural beauty, it’s a simple addition to elevate any DIY product.

This recipe combines carefully selected ingredients to create a solid musk cube that you can use in multiple skincare creations. It’s easy to make and ideal for anyone looking to personalize their body care with a touch of sophistication and fragrance. Enjoy crafting your own musk-infused essentials!

Gather the Ingredients

Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.

  • Natural Beeswax
  • Paraffin Oil: If not available to you, you can substitute it with sweet almond oil.
Paraffin oil is not considered a natural oil. It is a byproduct of petroleum refinement, which classifies it as a mineral oil rather than a plant-derived oil. Although it’s often used in skincare and cosmetics, paraffin oil is synthetic in origin. If a more natural alternative is preferred, sweet almond oil is an excellent substitute.
  • Refined Odorless Shea Butter
  • Coconut Oil
  • Musk Fragrance Oil
  • IPM Isopropyl Myristate: Optional but recommended.
IPM helps mix oils in your recipe. It ensures a smooth and even blend, preventing separation and enhancing the texture of your final product.
  • Pearly White Mica Color Powder

Did You Know?

We use refined odorless shea butter in our DIY Solid Musk Cube Recipe for a good reason. While raw shea butter offers numerous benefits, it often has a strong, earthy scent that can clash with the delightful musk fragrance.

By choosing odorless shea butter, you maintain the nourishing properties of shea while ensuring your musk cube has a pleasant aroma. This way, you can enjoy the best of both worlds—hydration without compromising on scent!

Gather the Gear

  • Scale to measure quantities
  • Small glass beaker
  • Glass mixing rod
  • Wooden popsicle stick
  • Silicone mold, preferably with square cavities; but other shapes are fine.

Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.

Steps: DIY Solid Musk Cube Recipe for Skincare Products

1- Begin by placing 50 grams (1.76 oz) of natural beeswax in a small glass beaker.

2- Pour 10 grams (0.35 oz) of paraffin oil over the natural beeswax. You can use sweet almond oil instead.

3- Add 5 grams (0.17 oz) of coconut oil into the beaker.

5- Use the end of a wooden popsicle stick to scoop a small amount, about 1/2 gram (0.017 oz), of pearly white mica powder and add it to the blend. Be careful not to use too much mica, as it might collect at the bottom of the musk cube.

6- Gently heat and melt the ingredients using a bain-marie (hot water bath). To set up a bain-marie, place the beaker in a larger pot partially filled with hot, steaming water, while the larger pot sits on a low-heat stove. This method will gradually heat and melt the contents without direct heat. Stir the mixture while it melts, and avoid boiling.

7- Add 1/2 gram (0.017 oz) of IPM isopropyl myristate to the mixture. The addition of this ingredient is optional but highly recommended.

8- Use a glass mixing rod to stir the mixture thoroughly.

9- Allow the mixture to cool down to 65 ℃ (149 ℉) before continuing.

10- Once the blend reaches a temperature of 65 ℃ (149 ℉), add 15 grams (0.52 oz) of musk fragrance oil. Ensure the temperature is as specified: if it is lower, the mixture might start to solidify due to the high content of beeswax. If the temperature is higher, the fragrance oil might evaporate.

Note: If the mixture starts to solidify as you are adding the fragrance oil, place the beaker back in the bain-marie for just a few seconds.

11- Stir the mixture thoroughly for about a minute to ensure that the fragrance oil is evenly distributed throughout the blend.

12- Pour the mixture into the mold. It is preferable to use a mold with square cavities for the musk cube, but any shape will work just fine.

13- Allow the mixture in the mold to dry and solidify for 12-24 hours.

14- After the musk cube has fully dried, gently remove it from the mold.

Hints and Tips

i) This DIY Solid Musk Cube Recipe is primarily intended for skincare products, but it can also serve as a home fragrance. Simply place the cube in a room or cabinet, and its amazing scent will permeate the space. If you’re making a musk cube intended for home use, be sure to omit the shea butter and coconut oil, as these ingredients are meant for skincare applications only.

ii) To prolong the shelf life of the musk cube, add 1/2 gram (0.017 oz) of vitamin E. This will help protect the cube against oxidation and rancidity, ensuring that it retains its fragrance and effectiveness over time.

iii) If you don’t plan to use the musk cube immediately but intend to use it after some days or weeks, wrap the cube in plastic wrap. This will help retain the musk fragrance, preventing it from dissipating over time.

Using It Right

a. Do Not Use Directly on Skin: It’s important to note that the solid musk cube should never be applied directly to the skin due to its high fragrance oil content. Instead, it is intended to be used as an ingredient in your skincare products.

b. Recommended Dosage: Use the musk cube at a dosage of 5% of the total product weight for the best results.

c. Examples of Use:

  • For a product weighing 100 grams, add 5 grams of grated musk powder.
  • For a product weighing 150 grams, incorporate 7.5 grams of grated musk powder to enhance fragrance and texture.

d. Melting as Needed: For some products, melting the musk piece or powder may be necessary; it depends on the type of skincare product you’re making. If you’re blending it into a warm mixture, it will dissolve easily. For other products, simply grating it into powder may suffice. Here are some articles on recipes that use it in both ways:

e. Adjust to Preference: Feel free to adjust the amount based on your personal fragrance preference, but stay within the recommended dosage for safety and effectiveness.
