Create your own luxurious bath salt blends with this simple DIY bath salt recipe. Dive into the world of homemade spa treatments as we show you how to craft effervescent bath salts that will transform your bathing experience.
With just a few basic ingredients and easy-to-follow steps, you can indulge in sparkling spa treats right in the comfort of your own home.
Ingredients Needed
- Sodium Bicarbonate (baking soda)
- Citric Acid
- Coarse Sea Salt
- Finely Grated Natural Soap. You need one heaped tablespoon.
- Fragrance Oils. Choose two that you like.
- Mica Color Powders. Here, I use green and blue. But you can opt for colors that you like.
Notes on Ingredients
Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.
When an essential oil is included, I use either concentrated or diluted essential oils. If using concentrated essential oils, use up to 0.5% by weight to ensure safety for all skin types. To use diluted essential oils, mix 1 gram (0.035 oz) of concentrated essential oil with 100 grams (3.5 oz) of sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.
If a recipe calls for fragrance oil, you can use diluted essential oil instead to benefit from both its scent and therapeutic effects. This provides a natural alternative to synthetic fragrance oils and offers additional benefits.
Tools Needed
- Two large bowls
- Measuring cups
- Tablespoon
- Small silicone spatula
- Small glass container with wide top opening to store your DIY Bath Salt
Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.
Steps: DIY Bath Salt Recipe
Spoons Explained!
In some articles, we use spoon measurements for non-liquid ingredients. These terms apply to both tablespoons and teaspoons:
- One Spoon: Ingredient filled and leveled in a measuring spoon.
- Rounded Spoon: Ingredient slightly piled above the spoon’s edge.
- Heaped Spoon: Ingredient scooped as high as possible on the spoon.
- Slightly Heaped Spoon: A bit more than a rounded spoon but not overly heaped.
Ensure the bowls, measuring cups, spatula and spoon are thoroughly dry.
1- Begin by placing 1/2 cup of sodium bicarbonate in a bowl. If there are any lumps, simply crush them with a silicone spatula.
2- Add 1/3 cup of citric acid.
3- Add 1/3 cup of coarse sea salt.
4- Add one heaped tablespoon of finely grated natural soap.
5- Stir the contents thoroughly with a spatula, ensuring that the mixture is homogeneous.
6- Split the contents into two parts, each in its own bowl.
7- Add 10 to 15 drops of one fragrance oil to one part, and same amount of the other fragrance oil to the second part.
8- Mix thoroughly each part with the spatula.
9- Add a little quantity of the green mica color to one part, and same amount of the blue mica color to the other part. It is preferable to align the scent with the color, e.g. use lavender fragrance oil with purple mica color.
10- Use a clean, dry spoon to layer the bath salt into a glass container, alternating between the two colors. This gives you a much more appealing product than if one color were used in one bottle.
11- The DIY Bath Salt is now ready. Make sure to cap the container tightly for storage.
Let’s Try It
12- Fill a large bowl with warm water, filling it three-quarters full. Here, I sprinkled a few dried flowers on the surface as well!
13- Pour one cup of the DIY Bath Salt into the water, and brace yourself for a spectacle.
14- As soon as the granules meet the water, a furious bubbling ensues, transforming the calm surface into a mesmerizing dance of effervescence. The bigger the salt amount, the more vigorous the reaction becomes, creating a sensory experience that captivates the senses and promises a truly indulgent bath.
Note
You cannot add carrier oils to the DIY Bath Salt. Only fragrance oils and color can be added for an attractive scent and look.
