If you’re looking for a natural and effective way to pamper your skin, why not make your own DIY rose body scrub? Roses are not only beautiful, but they also have a host of benefits for your skin, including reducing inflammation and hydrating dry skin. Plus, making your own scrub is easy and affordable, and you’ll know exactly what ingredients are going into it.
In this article, we’ll walk you through a simple step-by-step guide for making your own luxurious rose body scrub at home. So, let’s get started!
Ingredients Needed
Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.
- White Sugar
- Refined Odorless Shea Butter
- Coconut Oil
- Sweet Almond Oil
- Liquid Oil-soluble Color or Mica Color Powder
- Rose Fragrance Oil
- Polysorbate 80: It helps prevent the scrub from feeling too oily or sticky, making it easier to rinse off.
- Shredded Soap (Optional but Recommended): You can buy it shredded. We are using it to add foaming and cleansing effect to the scrub.
- Preservative (Optional), such as Phenoxyethanol or another skin-safe option, to extend shelf life and maintain freshness.
- Dried Rose Petals (Optional), for decoration
Note: Since this DIY rose body scrub will be used primarily in the shower, water may come into contact with the scrub in its container, which could lead to spoilage. To help prevent this, either scoop the scrub out with dry fingers or a spoon, or add a preservative.
Tools Needed
- Measuring cups: 1 cup, 1/2 cup
- Medium bowl
- Small cup
- Tablespoon
- Small silicone spatula
- Electric hand mixer
- Suitable glass container or jar to store your DIY Rose Body Scrub
Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.
Steps: DIY Rose Body Scrub
A. Prepare Mixture of Shea Butter and Coconut Oil
1- Place 1 1/2 tablespoons (one and a half tablespoons) of odorless shea butter in a small cup.
2- Add 1 1/2 tablespoons (one and a half tablespoons) of coconut oil to the shea butter.
3- Gently melt the mixture using a bain-marie (hot water bath). To set up a bain-marie, place the cup in a larger pot partially filled with hot water. This method will gradually melt the contents without direct heat. Avoid boiling.
B. Make the Scrub
4- Place 1 cup of white sugar in a medium bowl.
5- As an optional step, if you are including shredded soap in the scrub, add 1 tablespoon of it to the sugar.
6- Add 2 tablespoons of the shea butter and coconut oil mixture prepared earlier into the bowl.
7- Pour 1/2 cup of sweet almond oil into the bowl. I prefer to use this amount, but you can adjust the quantity to your liking. If you want the scrub to have a more oily feel, add more almond oil gradually, in small increments.
8- Use a small silicone spatula to stir the ingredients thoroughly.
9- Now, it’s time to add the coloring. Since this is a DIY rose body scrub, I will use red liquid oil-soluble color. Add 3 drops and mix well. Be cautious not to add too much coloring, as it may stain the skin.
10- Add 3 grams (0.10 ounce) of rose fragrance oil.
11- Add 3 grams (0.10 ounce) of polysorbate 80.
12- Preservation of Freshness: Using a preservative helps extend the shelf life of your scrub, ensuring it remains effective and safe to use. You can use Phenoxyethanol or another skin-safe option at a dosage of 1% or as recommended by the store where you purchase it. Here, you would add approximately 3.7 grams of preservative for a 1% concentration based on the total weight of the scrub.
13- Stir the mixture well.
14- Now, we can use an electric hand mixer to blend the ingredients further and refine the sugar in the scrub, making it less harsh on the skin. This will also give the scrub a unique appearance! Blend the mixture with the electric hand mixer for a couple of seconds, depending on how fine you prefer the scrub.
15- For a decorative touch, sprinkle some dried rose petals on top of the scrub to enhance its appearance.
16- The DIY rose body scrub is now complete. Store it in a container.
How To Use It
a. Prepare Your Skin: Wet your skin in the shower or bath to soften it.
b. Scoop and Apply: Using dry fingers or a spoon, scoop out a small amount of the scrub and gently massage it onto your skin in circular motions, focusing on rough areas like elbows, knees, and feet.
c. Let It Sit: Allow the scrub to sit on your skin for a few minutes to let the nourishing ingredients soak in.
d. Rinse and Pat Dry: Rinse thoroughly with warm water to remove the scrub and any excess oil, then gently pat your skin dry with a towel.
e. Moisturize: Follow up with your favorite moisturizer to keep your skin hydrated.
The Sweet Rewards
Exfoliation: Gently removes dead skin cells, revealing smoother, softer skin.
Hydration: Nourishes and moisturizes the skin with ingredients like shea butter, coconut oil, and sweet almond oil.
Aromatherapy: The rose fragrance oil provides a delightful scent, enhancing your bathing experience and promoting relaxation.
Customizable: Adjust the ingredients and colors to create a unique scrub tailored to your preferences.
Gentle Cleansing: The addition of shredded soap provides a foaming and cleansing effect, leaving your skin feeling fresh.
Preservation of Freshness: Using a preservative helps extend the shelf life of your scrub, ensuring it remains effective and safe to use.
