- Avocado carrier oil, lightweight (not dense)
- Cornstarch
- Vitamin E capsule for skin
- Polysorbate 80
- Mica color powder, red
- Rose fragrance oil
Notes on Ingredients
Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.
When an essential oil is included, I use either concentrated or diluted essential oils. If using concentrated essential oils, use up to 0.5% by weight to ensure safety for all skin types. To use diluted essential oils, mix 1 gram (0.035 oz) of concentrated essential oil with 100 grams (3.5 oz) of sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.
If a recipe calls for fragrance oil, you can use diluted essential oil instead to benefit from both its scent and therapeutic effects. This provides a natural alternative to synthetic fragrance oils and offers additional benefits.
Tools Needed
- Scale to weigh quantities
- Bowl
- Teaspoon
- Small silicone spatula
- Wooden popsicle stick
- Electric hand mixer
- Small container to store your DIY Body Lotion with Rose
Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.
Steps: DIY Body Lotion with Rose
1- Start by putting 50 grams (1.76 oz) of soft, odorless shea butter in a bowl.
2- Add 30 grams (1.05 oz) of lightweight avocado oil.
3- Gently heat and melt the ingredients in a bain-marie (hot water bath). A bain-marie is made by placing the bowl in a larger pot of hot, steaming water. This will gradually heat and melt the contents. Make sure to stir while the mixture is melting.
4- Allow the contents to cool down partially, as in the image. Do not let it cool completely.
5- Use the electric hand mixer to whip the contents for approximately three minutes, until you achieve a lotion-like texture.
6- With the tip of a wooden popsicle stick, add a little red mica color powder.
7- Mix thoroughly with a silicone spatula. For a stronger lotion color, add more mica powder, although a lighter color is generally preferred for body lotion.
8- After thoroughly mixing with the spatula, give the mixture a brief whipping with the electric mixer, to ensure that the mica color is uniformly blended.
9- Add 3 grams (0.10 oz) of rose fragrance oil.
10- Add 3 grams (0.10 oz) of polysorbate 80.
11- Squeeze the contents of a Vitamin E capsule into the mixture.
12- Mix thoroughly with the spatula.
13- Add 1/2 teaspoon of cornstarch.
14- Mix the cornstarch with the spatula, then give the mixture a final brief whipping with the electric mixer.
15- Scoop the DIY Body Lotion with Rose into a small container, and you’re done!
