Ingredients Needed

Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.

  • Distilled Water
  • Rose Hydrosol
  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Often synthesized in laboratories but can be derived from natural sources like plants.
  • Vegetable Glycerine
  • Sodium Lactate: Made from lactic acid through natural fermentation, it helps to maintain the skin’s natural pH balance and enhances moisturizing. Although it’s processed, it comes from natural sources.
  • Aloe Vera Juice, Cosmetic Grade: This is different from the drinkable juice found in supermarkets and is specially formulated for skincare. Extracted from the aloe vera plant, it is used for its soothing and hydrating benefits. It is natural but often processed for stability.
  • Niacinamide Powder: A powdered form of Vitamin B3, which is synthesized rather than naturally occurring in this form.
  • Preservative Germall Plus: A synthetic preservative used to extend the shelf life of skincare products.

6- Mix again until well combined.

7- Add 1 gram (0.035 oz) of sodium lactate. Sodium lactate helps to maintain the skin’s natural pH balance and enhances moisturizing. However, if you don’t have it, you can omit it without significantly affecting the overall effectiveness of the toner.

12- Add 2 grams (0.07 oz) of preservative Germall Plus.

13- Stir again to ensure even distribution of the preservative.

14- If desired, add a small amount of water-soluble food coloring using the tip of a toothpick. Toners typically have a light color, so add only a little.

15- Mix thoroughly to blend in the color.

pH Acidity Test

Now that the DIY Face Toner with Rose and Niacinamide is finished, it’s crucial to ensure its pH acidity level is safe. Skipping this step could lead to potential allergic reactions if the toner’s pH is too high. Let’s proceed with checking.

16- With the tip of the glass mixing rod, pick up a few drops of the face toner and soak one end of the pH test paper.

17- The soaked part of the paper will change color, and the pH acidity level of the toner is indicated by this color. Compare the color against the range of colors in the pH kit, and note the number against the matching color.

In my case, the color is light green and the pH level is 7. The recommended range for the DIY face toner is 4.5 to 5.5. Let’s lower it.

18- To lower the pH level, mix equal parts of citric acid and distilled water, e.g. 10 grams (0.35 oz) of citric acid and 10 grams (0.35 oz) of distilled water.

19- Add 10 drops of the citric acid solution to the DIY face toner.

20- Mix thoroughly.

21- Take again the pH reading as per steps 16 and 17 above. In my case, I added 10 drops and the pH reading came to 5 which is good.

22- Once you are satisfied with the pH test, pour the face toner into a suitable bottle. For a decorative touch, you can add a dried rosebud, as shown in the image below!
