Did You Know?
Licorice comes from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant, native to Europe and Asia. This remarkable root is 30 to 50 times sweeter than sugar, making it a popular natural sweetener in candies and beverages. Ancient civilizations, including the Egyptians and Greeks, valued licorice for both its flavor and medicinal properties, often using it to soothe sore throats and digestive issues.
The key compound in licorice, glycyrrhizin, provides its sweetness and various health benefits. Today, licorice is found in products like herbal teas, supplements, and skincare items. However, it can interact with certain medications, so it’s wise to consult a healthcare provider before using it as a supplement.
Gather the Gear
- Scale to weigh quantities
- Medium bowl
- Teaspoon
- Small whisk
- Silicone soap mold
Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.
Steps for DIY Licorice and Lemon Soap Recipe
1- Cut the white glycerin soap base into strips. You need 120 grams (4.23 oz).
2- Place 120 grams (4.23 oz) of glycerin soap base strips in a medium bowl.
3- Gently heat and melt the glycerin soap strips using a bain-marie (hot water bath). To set up a bain-marie, place the bowl in a larger pot partially filled with hot, steaming water, while the pot sits on a low-heat stove. This method will gradually heat and melt the soap without direct heat. Stir the mixture while it melts, and avoid boiling.
4- Add 1/2 teaspoon of fine licorice powder to the melted soap.
5- Use a small whisk to stir the mixture vigorously until the licorice powder is well blended with the soap. If the melted glycerin begins to harden slightly, return the bowl to the bain-marie for just a few seconds to reheat it.
6- Pour 1/2 teaspoon of lemon carrier oil into the mixture.
7- Stir the blend thoroughly, ensuring it hasn’t begun to harden. If the mixture shows signs of hardening, reheat it in the bain-marie for a few seconds.
8- Add 6 drops of lemon fragrance oil to the mixture.
9- Give the blend a final thorough stir.
10- Pour the mixture into a soap mold cavity. Then, spray the surface with 70% medical alcohol to eliminate any bubbles.
11- Allow the soap to cool and solidify (about 12-24 hours).
12- After the soap has fully solidified, gently remove it from the mold, and you’re done! You can start using the soap the next day. If you plan to use it after several days or weeks, wrap the soap bar in plastic wrap to prevent condensation from forming on the surface.
