Steps: How to Make Dried Beetroot Powder
Important Note: This method involves peeling the beetroot bulbs into thin strips, which must be laid out in the sun for three days to dry completely. The subsequent grinding process to create fine powder cannot proceed unless the strips are fully dry. For best results, plan to make the dried beetroot powder during a period of sunny weather. If the weather is cold, overcast, or rainy, it’s better to postpone the process until suitable conditions are available.
1- Begin by peeling the outer skin of the 2 beetroot bulbs (whole beets) with a knife.
2- Wash thoroughly the peeled beetroot bulbs with water.
3- Use a fine peeler to shred the body of the washed beetroots into thin strips.
4- In case the beetroot strips leak juice on the plate, place the strips in a sieve and allow them to drain.
Important: In case of beet juice leak, do not wash the strips with water; this might take away the beet essence. Just allow the strips to drip in a sieve.
5- Pour the beetroot strips onto a clean large tray.
6- Spread the strips evenly across the tray, and try as best as you can to minimize overlap. The large tray helps lay a nearly single layer for proper drying, reducing the amount of stacking.
7- Set the tray with the beetroot strips in the sun and allow 3 sunny days for complete drying. As advised above, if the weather is cold, overcast, or rainy, it’s better to postpone making the beetroot powder, as the strips won’t dry properly and will remain humid.
8- After 3 days drying in the sun, check the beetroot strips with your fingers. If they feel completely dry, collect them into a bowl in preparation for grinding.
9- Use a high-powered electric grinder, such as a spice or coffee grinder, to finely grind the dried beetroot strips into a smooth powder.
10- After the initial grinding, sift the mixture through a fine sieve to separate the larger pieces from the fine powder. Re-grind the larger pieces and repeat the sifting process until all the material is finely powdered.
Safety Note: When removing the ground beetroot from the grinder, always disconnect the machine from the power source.
11- Pour the powder into a suitable glass container and seal it. The recipe for how to make dried beetroot powder is now complete!
