The DIY turmeric and lemon scrub has a powerful combination of ingredients that is well-known for its skin-nourishing and brightening properties.

In this article, we’ll provide you with an easy and step-by-step guide on how to make your own turmeric and lemon scrub, along with tips on how to use it for best results.

So, let’s get started and learn how to power up your skincare routine with this amazing natural scrub.

Ingredients Needed

  • Sugar – Choose sugar that is a bit coarse.
  • Turmeric – Ensure you use turmeric that is suitable for skincare.
  • Shower Gel that is transparent or very slightly colored.
  • Soft Shea Butter – If you don’t have it, you can use sweet almond oil or jojoba oil as a substitute.
  • Pure Lemon Essential Oil
  • Optional: Phenoxyethanol preservative.

Notes on Ingredients

Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.

When an essential oil is included, I use either concentrated or diluted essential oils. If using concentrated essential oils, use up to 0.5% by weight to ensure safety for all skin types. To use diluted essential oils, mix 1 gram (0.035 oz) of concentrated essential oil with 100 grams (3.5 oz) of sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.

If a recipe calls for fragrance oil, you can use diluted essential oil instead to benefit from both its scent and therapeutic effects. This provides a natural alternative to synthetic fragrance oils and offers additional benefits.

Precautions

  • Photosensitivity: Even though the scrub is rinsed off, lemon essential oil can still make the skin more sensitive to sunlight. Avoid direct sun exposure for a short time after use.
  • Dilution: If you have sensitive skin or are concerned about irritation, you can use diluted lemon essential oil in the recipe to minimize irritation risk. Alternatively, consider using other essential oils that are gentler on sensitive skin, such as chamomile or lavender.
  • Patch Test: Conduct a patch test before using the scrub extensively to ensure no adverse reaction occurs.

Tools Needed

  • Scale to weigh quantities
  • Large bowl
  • Silicone or wooden spatula
  • Small glass container to store your DIY Turmeric and Lemon Scrub

Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.

4- Now, add the shower gel, starting with 10 grams (0.35 oz).

5- Stir the mixture with a spatula and assess the consistency. I ended up adding more than 10 grams to achieve the desired texture, but be cautious not to add too much. If you prefer a more liquid scrub, you can add more.

Note: Keep in mind that the scrub will thicken as it settles overnight and will be thicker the next day than it appears immediately after preparation.

6- Add 1g (0.035 oz) of turmeric.

7- Mix the contents thoroughly.

8- Now, we will add the pure lemon essential oil. For this quantity of scrub, we will add 3g (0.1 oz) of the essential oil. Mix thoroughly.

9- As an option, you can add a preservative to the scrub at this stage. You can add 1g (0.035 oz) of phenoxyethanol per the quantity of scrub we are making in this article. This way, you can be assured that even if water drops accidentally get introduced into the scrub while using it, the preservative will keep it from spoiling.

However, if you prefer not to use a preservative, it’s important to make sure that no water gets introduced into the scrub. This is because water can promote bacterial growth, which can cause the scrub to spoil. So, if you don’t want to use a preservative, be sure to store the scrub in a cool, dry place and use clean, dry hands or a spoon to scoop out the desired amount.
