- Distilled water
- Vegetable glycerine
- Blue nila powder for skincare applications. Also called indigo blue powder.
- Xanthan gum powder
- Guar gum powder
- Liquid germall plus preservative
Notes on Ingredients
Choose high-quality ingredients to boost the effectiveness and safety of your DIY beauty products.
When an essential oil is included, I use either concentrated or diluted essential oils. If using concentrated essential oils, use up to 0.5% by weight to ensure safety for all skin types. To use diluted essential oils, mix 1 gram (0.035 oz) of concentrated essential oil with 100 grams (3.5 oz) of sweet almond oil or jojoba oil.
If a recipe calls for fragrance oil, you can use diluted essential oil instead to benefit from both its scent and therapeutic effects. This provides a natural alternative to synthetic fragrance oils and offers additional benefits.
Tools Needed
- Scale to weigh quantities
- Medium-sized glass beaker
- Small glass beaker
- Small plate
- Glass mixing rod
- Whisk
- Small glass container to store your DIY Face Mask with Blue Nila and Frankincense
Prior to use, ensure that both your utensils and containers are properly cleaned and disinfected. Wash them with warm soapy water, dry with a tissue, and then sanitize by spraying with 70% medical alcohol. Wipe them clean and let them air dry before use.

Spoons Explained!
In some articles, we use spoon measurements for non-liquid ingredients. These terms apply to both tablespoons and teaspoons:
- One Spoon: Ingredient filled and leveled in a measuring spoon.
- Rounded Spoon: Ingredient slightly piled above the spoon’s edge.
- Heaped Spoon: Ingredient scooped as high as possible on the spoon.
- Slightly Heaped Spoon: A bit more than a rounded spoon but not overly heaped.
A. Let’s First Prepare Our Core Magical Solution:
Frankincense-Infused Water
1- Put 2 heaped teaspoons of frankincense resin granules on a small plate.
2- Wash the granules properly with water to remove dirt and impurities, and let them dry for one hour. You just want to clean them with water and not soak them. Do not let them dry for more than one hour.
3- Place the washed and dry frankincense granules in a small glass container.
4- Pour 1 cup of distilled water into the container.
5- Allow the frankincense granules to soak in the distilled water for 12 hours.
6- After 12 hours, the contents turn into a milky solution. The milky appearance indicates that the frankincense resin is of good quality. It also indicates that the water has absorbed the beneficial compounds from the resin. This solution serves as a key ingredient in the DIY face mask, contributing to its unique properties and potential skincare benefits.
7- Strain out the frankincense residue before continuing to the next step.
B. Making the Face Mask
8- Pour 86 grams (3.03 oz) of the frankincense-infused water into a medium-sized glass beaker.
9- In a separate small beaker, pour 10 grams (0.35 oz) of vegetable glycerine.
10- Add 1.5 grams (0.053 oz) of xanthan gum powder to the glycerine in the small beaker.
11- Add 1.5 grams (0.053 oz) of guar gum powder into the small beaker.
12- With a glass mixing rod, stir thoroughly the xanthan gum and the guar gum with the glycerine.
13- Slowly, and while continuously stirring with the mixing rod, pour the xanthan-guar-glycerine mixture into the frankincense-infused water in the medium-sized beaker. It is important to do this slowly while stirring, to prevent the xanthan and guar gums from forming lumps.
14- Mix thoroughly and rigorously the contents with the mixing rod. The mixture becomes gelatinous.
15- Add 0.5 gram (0.017 oz) of liquid germall plus as preservative.
16- Add 0.5 gram (0.017 oz) of blue nila powder.
17- Mix the contents with the mixing rod, then use a whisk for a thorough blending of the ingredients.
18- Pour the DIY Face Mask with Blue Nila and Frankincense into a small glass container. The face mask is now ready for use.
